Staying Healthy When Pets Age

Senior pets tend to have a lot of health needs. Queen City Veterinary Clinic supports aging cats and dogs in the Cincinnati area. Senior pets are cherished members of the family, and they deserve the same level of attention, comfort, and medical care as they age. With thoughtful planning and regular veterinary check-ups, your aging pet can enjoy their golden years to the fullest.

Meeting the Needs of Senior Pets

Caring for a senior pet means paying closer attention to subtle changes in behavior, energy levels, mobility, and appetite. What might seem like a minor issue can sometimes be an early sign of a more serious condition. If you think something has changed with your pet, reach out to our veterinary professionals!

Our veterinarians recommend semiannual exams for all senior pets. These twice-a-year check-ups allow us to make informed, proactive adjustments to your pet’s care plan. In addition to medical assessments, we’ll talk with you about changes to diet, exercise routines, pain management, and home accommodations to make daily life easier for your pet. Our goal is to keep your aging companion comfortable and mobile for as long as possible.

The Role of Diagnostics When Pets Age

Physical exams alone don’t tell veterinarians everything about your pet.
As pets age, the risk for chronic illnesses increases, and early detection can make a big difference in managing these conditions effectively. Bloodwork, urinalysis, and other screenings are used to identify changes in organ function and overall health before symptoms appear. Annual bloodwork, especially, is recommended for all senior pets.

Even if your pet seems healthy, regular diagnostic screenings help our staff track their baseline health and catch trends over time. At Queen City Veterinary Clinic, we make diagnostic recommendations based on your pet’s age, breed, and medical history, ensuring that each test has a purpose to support your pet’s best life.

Managing Your Pet’s Health Conditions

Senior pets are more prone to developing chronic health conditions, many of which can be managed effectively with the right treatment plan. Our veterinary team has experience with diagnosis and management for many chronic health conditions that aging cats and dogs develop, including:

Each of these conditions comes with challenges, but we will form a care plan that will include regular monitoring, appropriate medications, nutritional support, and ongoing communication. We’ll work closely with you to adjust treatments as needed if any new symptoms appear. If you are concerned about how your pet is fairing at home, never hesitate to reach out to us. Same-day sick appointments are often available.
