Preventing Reproduction in Pets
Spaying and neutering are surgeries that benefit your pet’s long-term health. Queen City Veterinary Clinic in Cincinnati performs spay and neuter procedures for both cats and dogs. By choosing to spay or neuter your pet, you’re making a responsible decision that benefits your animal, your household, and the greater community. Our staff takes the safety of all pets that receive surgery at our clinic seriously.

What is Spaying and Neutering?
Spay and neuter surgeries are routine procedures performed under anesthesia to prevent pets from reproducing. Spaying involves removing the ovaries and uterus of a female pet, while neutering involves removing the testicles of a male pet. These procedures are typically recommended around 6 months of age, although larger breed dogs may benefit from waiting until closer to 12 months, depending on growth and development. Our veterinary staff will discuss the best timing for your specific pet, considering their breed and size.
Each pet patient receives a thorough pre-surgical exam, individualized anesthesia protocol, and attentive monitoring from our skilled staff. We also prioritize pain management before and after surgery.
The Health, Behavior, and Community Benefits
Spaying and neutering offer benefits beyond preventing unplanned litters.
Medically, these surgeries reduce the risk of serious health problems, such as uterine infections (pyometra) and mammary tumors in females, as well as testicular and prostate cancers in males.. These benefits can add years to your pet’s life and significantly improve their quality of life.
Behaviorally, altered pets are often less prone to roaming, marking territory, mounting, or showing aggression related to mating instincts. This can make your pet easier to manage and more comfortable living in a household setting, especially in multi-pet homes.
From a community standpoint, spaying and neutering reduce the number of animals in shelters and rescues. Every year, millions of dogs and cats enter shelters, and not all find homes. By preventing accidental litters, you’re helping to alleviate the burden on animal shelters through reducing pet overpopulation.

Cryptorchid Neuter Surgery
In some male pets, one or both testicles may fail to descend into the scrotum, a condition known as cryptorchidism. Pets with retained testicles are at a higher risk for testicular cancer and other complications, making surgery necessary even if the pet won’t be breeding.
Our veterinarians are experienced in performing cryptorchid surgeries, which involve locating and safely removing the undescended testicle(s). These procedures are more complex than standard neuters, requiring additional care and surgical skill, but your pet is in capable hands with our experienced staff. We will always perform a pre-surgical evaluation and discuss the findings with you, including any special considerations or post-operative instructions unique to your pet’s condition.
